My husband proposed to me on a date. He made it look like it was just the usual Friday night thing that we always do but I did suspect something was up because he seemed exceptionally clumsy and forgetful that night. We pulled over into a service station and he asked me then - he had the engagement ring in his pocket and almost dropped it in his haste. I said yes of course and then we went back to my parents' place and told them. It wasn't the most romantic marriage proposal but I'm happy with it.

My husband wanted to really get it right and planned right from the start what he would do - he told me later that he had planned it for weeks. He even got my sister to pinch one of the rings from my jewelry box so that he could size the engagement ring properly. He took me out for a romantic dinner in a very expensive restaurant (and I knew something was up because we usually only did that on special occasions like birthdays). Anyhow, after dinner, we went for a stroll along the beach and he dropped down on one knee and asked me there and then...it was a very special moment for me. I started crying but managed to say 'yes' amidst the tears of joy. My advice - try to be natural and be yourself.

My marriage proposal story has a hot air balloon in it. My boyfriend at that time had planned to ask for my hand in marriage during a hot air balloon trip. He told me that it was for my birthday (and it was close to the date so I didn't suspect anything). Still, he got me up at 6am in the morning (and it was like in the middle of winter!) and I was very reluctant to get up to go - I had looked outside and the weather wasn't all that great (all gray and cloudy). But he managed to convince me to go - I was rather surprised at his insistence but he kept saying that he had already paid a deposit and would lose it if we didn't show. We went up and I was freezing my toes off and rather annoyed with him really...until of course he proposed and asked me to marry him. Then all that effort made me just want to cry. The engagement ring he had picked out wasn't quite what I wanted though but I accepted it anyway.
